Slaapmutske Kerstmutske Christmas Nightcap Review

The brewer is Slaapmutske; the brewery is De Proef Brouwerij in Belgium. This is a malty Christmas beer called Kerstmutske Christmas, which means Christmas Nightcap.

Kerstmutske Christmas Nightcap pour cloudy mahogany with a cream head that reduces to what looks like cloud cover from 30,000 feet. There’s a lot happening in the aroma with caramel, cocoa, plums, raisins, chocolate bread, molasses, and gingerbread spices. The brewery got all those spice notes from the yeast, the same yeast as it uses in it’s Brown. The flavor is toasted malts, caramel, milk chocolate, plums, and gingerbread. It’s not particularly sweet. It’s bottle conditioned, 28 IBU and 7.4% ABV. The mouthfeel is rich and smooth with a clean finish.

Kerstmutske Christmas Nightcap is a very nice Belgian Brown Ale. This is classic Belgian. The label features a smiling moon wearing a “sleeping hat,” which shares the double meaning of English expression “nightcap.” The moon is smiling because after the las drink of the evening, you feel very pleasant indeed.

While it's difficult to picture Santa as a young man, he was once. He met the future Mrs. Claus one snowy night when she offered him a winter ale that she brewed herself. It was love at first sight - for both the Mrs. and her winter ales. With Santa's growing fame, his favorite brews became named after his favorite day - Christmas. Santa now travels the world each year to spread the joy that began in a stable in Bethlehem two millennia ago.
