Gayant La Goudale de Noël Review

Today, a Christmas beer from France, a Bière de Garde. This is a style of unfiltered farmhouse ale brewed in Northern France. The term means “beer for keeping.” I cellared this one for 2 years, and it is delicious. Les Brasseurs de Gayant produced la Goudale de Noël.

La Goudale de Noël pours copper with a thin white head of foam that reduces to lace. The aroma has green apples, caramel malts, honey, and bready yeast. On tasting I pick up caramel toasted malts and rich spices of coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and orange zest. It’s 7.7% ABV with a smooth mouthfeel and good carbonation.

The term Goudale is 14th century French for “Good ale.” Gayant uses that term for their ancient beers, including this winner.
