Brewmaster Jack Barrel-Aged Prinsipia

Brewmaster Jack, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, is another story of home brewer turned big-time brewer. Started in 2011, and greatly expanded in 2014, Brewmaster Jack brews straight-forward beer with locally sourced malts. Prinsipia is a barrel-aged Quad using Tennessee Whiskey Barrels.

Prinsipia pours dark brown with a touch of tan foam. It smells fantastic! Lots of whiskey barrel, dried plums, black cherry, and caramelized sugar on the nose. On tasting I pick up dried plums, leather, brown sugar, and a bit of rich root beer notes amongst the carbonation. The mouthfeel is clean and sweet. Almost too clean, leaving the beer with a medium length finish.

According to the brewery, Prinsipia is made with two row barley, beet sugar, date sugar, and a special yeast to create a wonderful array of flavors. It’s a big one at 11.5% ABV.

The name Prinsipia is inspired by Isaac Newton’s most famous work, “Principia,” with a little more emphasis on the “sip.”

While it's difficult to picture Santa as a young man, he was once. He met the future Mrs. Claus one snowy night when she offered him a winter ale that she brewed herself. It was love at first sight - for both the Mrs. and her winter ales. With Santa's growing fame, his favorite brews became named after his favorite day - Christmas. Santa now travels the world each year to spread the joy that began in a stable in Bethlehem two millennia ago.
